OBITUARY:
FREMONT -- Rollin Perry Cunningham, a former City Council member who was heavily involved in the community for many years, died of a heart attack on Oct. 31. He was 86.
Cunningham was born Oct. 22, 1921, in Seattle.
During World War II he served in the Merchant Marine, and in 1945 he married his wife of 62 years, Elaine Jones.
"I can't pick out one thing about him. ... He was just great," his wife said Wednesday.
The Cunninghams moved to Irvington in 1955, a year before Fremont was incorporated. He was elected to the city's second City Council in 1958 and served one four-year term.
He was a good man," said former Councilmember Kenneth Steadman, who served on the council with Cunningham. "We saw eye to eye when we served on the council together. He was very honest and straightforward."
Don Dillon Sr., who was elected to the council in 1962, said Cunningham was a "pleasant person." He added that when Cunningham told him that he had canvassed door to door, "it sounded real wise, and I followed suit when I ran my campaign."
Cunningham founded Rollin Cunningham Realty in 1963.
He was the past president of Seniors in Retirement and founder and charter president of Irvington Business Association and the Fremont Boy's Club. Cunningham also was an active member in the Lions and Elk's clubs.
He traveled to 72 countries and was an avid bowler. He bowled two days before he died.
In addition to his wife, Cunningham is survived by three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no funeral services. Instead, the family will have a private celebration of Cunningham's life.
