Officials do not know where the 2 ½ year-old Turner youth picked up the deadly bacteria.
A 2 ½ year old Turner boy has died after being infected with a strain of E. coli bacteria, Oregon’s first such death in 1997, health officials said Thursday.
Samuel V. “Sammy” Kurian died in Portland more than two weeks after he came down with symptoms in late June, his parents said.
“We don’t know where Sammy got this,” said his mother, Julie Kurian.
State health officials are investigating recent reports of E. coli infection, but no links among the 47 cases reported so far this year have been found, said Dr. William E. Keene, an epidemiologist in the state Health Division.
The Kurians said they reported to health officials that Sammy, who died Wednesday, had eaten at a fast-food restaurant in Corvallis, on June 24.
Bob Wilson, the environmental health director for Benton County, said an inspection of the restaurant on Tuesday revealed no problems with food handling or cooking temperatures.
“We were not able to establish any connection between food safety and handling practices at the restaurant and this particular case,” Wilson said.
The Kurians said they didn’t want to speculate further about the source of the bacteria.
“What we want parents to be is not afraid, but informed,” said Julie Kurian, who is a physician herself. “This is not a spectacle. We don’t want this to be sensationalized.”

TURNER – Samuel Kurian, 2 year-old son of Julie and Puthen Kurian, died Wednesday in Portland from an E. coli infection.
He was born in Edgewood, Kentucky, and moved with his family to Salem in 1995. He attended with his family the Northwest International Church in Portland.
Survivors include his parents; sister, Elena, and brother, Jacob, both of Turner; and grandparents, William and Agnes Scott of Waco, Texas, Richard Parke, of Dallas, Texas, and Puthen and Sucy Kurian of Kerala, India.
Visiting will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Chapel, Salem. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the mortuary. Interment will be in Cloverdale Cemetery. Contributions: American Red Cross for Blood Donations, or Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.
