Alice Lydon
November 2, 1915 - February 13, 2009
Long-time Coalinga resident Alice Lydon passed away on February 13 in Goleta, CA at the age of 93, after a long illness.
Born Alice Ball in Nampa, Idaho, on November 2, 1915, she grew up in Turner, Oregon and Silver City, Idaho, and enrolled in the College of Idaho after her high school graduation. In 1936 she left the College of Idaho to enroll in secretarial school in Los Angeles, after which she worked as a secretary for a local distilling company and Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
In 1940 she married Robert Lydon and moved to Bakersfield, CA, where she spent World War Two as a secretary at Minter Field Air Force Base. In 1946 her husband's transfer by Chevron Oil Company brought them to Coalinga, with their first-born child, Sharon. In her early 40's Alice returned to college, commuting to Fresno State to obtain her Bachelor's degree, followed by a teaching credential. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher in Huron, CA, and in 1957 became a full-time sixth grade teacher at Nell Dawson School here in Coalinga, where she remained until her retirement in 1980.
She loved teaching, and after her retirement continued working as a Substltute teacher for many years. She also traveled extensively, seeing many parts of the world with her daughter and various friends. In 2004 health issues necessitated her relocation to Goleta, CA, where she lived at the Maravilla Senior Care Facility until her passing.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon, of Golden, Colorado, her son, Terrence, and wife, Susan, of Goleta, Ca, and five grandchildren. Her ashes will be placed in her family plot at Cloverdale Cemetery in Turner, Oregon, later this spring. Memorial contributions in Alice's name may be made to the Camp Yeager Summer Campership Fund, in care of the Coalinga-Huron Parks & Recreation Department.
