OBITUARY:
A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Of Jeremiah Miles, Who Passed Away At A Ripe Old Age Near Turner.
MARION, Or., Aug. 4 – Jeremiah Miles died here July 31, 1902, aged 82 years, 2 months and 18 days. He was the son of David and Jane Miles, of Pleasant Hill, Ohio, and was born in Miami county, Ohio, May 13, 1820.
He enlisted in early life in the Christian warfare, and often evinced the baptismal cleansing of the Holy Spirit. In 1841, he married Rebecca K., daughter of Samuel and Annie Miles, of West Milton, Miami county, Ohio. In 1854 he removed with his little family to Marshall county, Iowa, which he made his home until the spring of 1866.
From Iowa he went to Polk county, Indiana, remaining two years. From Indiana he removed to the scenes of his childhood in Miami county, Ohio, remaining two years. In 1870 he removed from Miami county to Clay county, Kansas, remaining 20 years. Here he held several civil offices of trust for the county.
In 1890 he removed from Kansas to Marion county, Oregon, living two years with his daughter Lizzie, in Salem, and his son, Samuel, in Polk county; buying his home jointly with his son, Joseph, in 1895, to which place near Turner, he removed, making it his home until his demise.
He died in faith and trust in Christ, and was a consistent and faithful member of the religious body of Friends, being an esteemed leader in that church for a number of years.
He bore a lingering illness with Christian patience and fortitude, calling the names of his wife and children in loving remembrance near the close. Five children – three sons and two daughters – survive him, one son at Miltonvale, Cloud county, Kansas; one son and a daughter at Turner; one daughter at Wardner, Idaho, and a son at Rickreall, Oregon, and while they mourn his demise, they rejoice that he is freed from his suffering.
The funeral services were held at his home. Revs. B.F. Hinshaw, of Marion, Chas. Baldwin, of Rosedale; and Rev. Gordon, of Turner, jointly conducted the services by whom words of comfort were spoken, and the effects of a life like the deceased’s which from childhood had been one of almost spotless purity and temperate habits, had on those with whom he came in contact. The remains were followed by a large number of friends to the graveyard, a few miles north of Turner, where he was laid away to await the final call at the resurrection morning.
