Robert True, 62, of Salem, died Thursday from multiple myeloma.
He was born in Holyoke, Mass., moved to Portland in 1937 and later to Salem, where he lived for 37 years. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1959 and served in the Army for two years. He worked for the Oregon State Parks Department from 1961 to 1992, becoming the director/historian of the Champoeg Visitor Center in 1977 and retiring as Region 1 resource coordinator. During his years with the state parks, he helped to develop the first statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, created the State Park Information Center and worked on an interpretive sign program along the Oregon Trail. He enjoyed climbing, hiking and backpacking and was a member of Chemeketans outdoor club. He also enjoyed reading.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, whom he married in 1962; daughters Janet Miller and Patricia True-Hunter, both of Salem; and five grandchildren.
Visiting will be at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday, and services 1 p.m. Monday, all at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services. Interment will follow in Cloverdale Cemetery, Turner.
