KEIZER - Manfred was born on February 12, 1930 in Geisenheim am Rhein, Germany to Adam and Wilhelmine Hanssen. He graduated from Gymnasium (high school) in Geisenheim and the Gartenbauanstalt (College) also in Geisenheim with a degree in Landscape Architecture.
In 1953 he came to the United States and was drafted into the US Army. Returning from two years of service, he began his work as a landscape designer and foreman for Iufer Landscape Co., in Salem, Oregon. Manfred married Clara Hanssen on October 11, 1958 at Christ Lutheran Church.
Singing in the church choir was a great enjoyment for Manfred. He enjoyed playing the accordion, cooking, gardening, and watching his grandchildren play soccer and T-Ball.
In 1966 Manfred and Clara started Hanssen Landscape Co., which is still family owned and operated.
Manfred is survived by his wife, Clara; sons, Brian and wife Coleen, Alan and wife Rhonda, Kevin and wife Mina; 13 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and his sister Gerda Schifferer and husband Carl.
Viewing will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 29 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4440 State St., Salem. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
