OBITUARY:
John Marthaler, 80, died at his home August 12, 1936, following an illness of several years.
He was born in Illinois January 12, 1856, the oldest of eleven children. His parents Joseph and Annie Kneter Marthaler were born in Bavaria (Germany) and migrated to the United States. They moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota, when he was nine months old. During his youth, he farmed with his father but in 1877 he left home and came to Marion County, by way of Sacramento, California, and Corvallis, Oregon. He worked for Freeman Eldredge for several years and then rented 400 acres which he farmed for seven years. In 1891 he married Margaret Skaife and in 1893 bought her parents' farm, where he lived until his death.
He is survived by his wife Maggie, twins Freeman Marthaler and Edna Short, Nellie DuRette, Rita Mahony and Magaret Sego, and twelve grandchildren. Two brothers and three sisters in Minnesota also survive.
Funeral services were held from the St. Louis Catholic Church followed by burial in the Fairfield Cemetery.
