OBITUARY:
GERVAIS — Billy Hammond Sr., 58, died Thursday in Gastonia, N.C. Cause of death was unavailable.
He was born in Greenville, S.C. He served in the Air Force and was discharged in 1959. He moved to Oregon when he was 21 and moved from Salem to Gervais in 1968. He was a sales representative for Coca Cola for 25 years. He enjoyed restoring old cars, singing, playing guitar, painting and carpentry.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra; son, Billy Jr. of Athens, Ga.; daughter, Deborah Crow of Lyons; stepson, Darren Poole of Salem; stepdaughters, Cheryl Neal of Newport, Lisa Ragoza of Salem and Anita Pool of Gervais; mother, Bessie Hammond of Greenville, S.C.; brothers, Don and Kenneth, both of Greenville, and Jim of Salem; sisters, Linda and Kathy Hammond, Lilie Chandler and Judy Keeler, all of Greenville; and two grandchildren.
Visiting will be noon to 6 p.m. today in Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Brooks Assembly of God Church, which he attended. Interment will be in Fairfield Pioneer Cemetery near Gervais.
