OBITUARY:
Halls Ferry Man Killed At Late Hour Last Night.
A telephone message came to the county coroner at midnight, saying that a man, whose name the informant could not give, had been killed at Halls Ferry. From the very meager information given, it appears that it was the result of an accident at a gravel plant at the river, though no accurate details could be gathered.
Coroner Rigdon at once started for the scene of the accident, but could not be reached by phone and had not returned to Salem at the time of going to press. It was thought by the original informant that the man was a stranger in this part of the country.

Rancher is Killed By Blast.
James Scanlon, Sixty, Halls Ferry Man, Is Hurled 75 Feet As Powder Explodes.
Neighbors who became alarmed yesterday when James Scanlon, aged 60 years of age, failed for two days to return to his small cabin on his farm near Halls Ferry last night found Scanlon’s dead body near his home. Indications point to the fact that Scanlon was killed Wednesday evening while blasting stumps, according to Coroner Rigdon, who investigated the case today.
His face terribly lacerated and his body badly bruised, Scanlon was thrown about 75 feet from the stump under which powder had been placed. Those who investigated were unable to determine in just what manner the accident occurred.
Scanlon had lived on his place at Halls Ferry, south of Salem, for about eight years and had resided in this vicinity for 25 years. He was a Canadian by birth and was a bachelor. Authorities were today unable to find whether or not he had any relatives living.
Funeral arrangements will be made later.

Man Killed By Blast Was James Scanlon.
It became known yesterday that the man who was killed near Halls Ferry while blasting stumps Wednesday, and whose body was found Friday night by neighbors who had missed him, was James Scanlon, a man between 50 and 60 years old.
Scanlon was seen Wednesday afternoon blasting stumps on his farm and then was missed. He lived alone. Neighbors began the search. Indications were that a charge of dynamite had thrown his body about 75 feet from the point of explosion.
Scanlon had lived in the neighborhood 25 or 30 years and was highly respected by his neighbors. No trace of relatives has been found. It is believed he had a brother in one of the Dakotas from whom he had not heard in many years, and he had mentioned a sister in Cincinnati. He was a Canadian by birth.
