OBITUARY:
Good Life Ends.
Calvin R. Downey Passes Away At His Old Home Near Sublimity.
His Life Was a Very Useful One and the Best Part of It Was Devoted to His Family.
Was the Father of Sixteen Children, Thirteen of Whom Survive Him.
After a gradual failing of health for the last year, Calvin R. Downey died suddenly at his home, three miles east of Sublimity, at 2:10 o'clock Saturday morning, January 2, 1904, aged 71 years, 5 months and 19 days.
Calvin R. Downey was born in Montreal, Canada, July 13, 1832. He moved with his parents to Illinois when about eight years old, and they moved from there to Missouri, where he was married to Arie Ann Bates, April 25, 1861 and crossed the plains with her to Oregon in 1865 where they took up a homestead near Sublimity in 1869. One year later his wife died, leaving him with five small children, which he bravely struggled for and kept together for five years, when he married Cyrena Harris, July 20, 1875, by whom he had eleven children, thus making him the father of sixteen children, three of whom have gone before, namely, Minnie R. Smith, who died November 29, 1889; Tim A. Downey, September 7, 1902, and an infant son in 1888. The other thirteen, with his wife, survive him, as follows, with their respective residences: Harry J. Downey, Paha, Washington; Mrs. Callie A. Van Cleave, Gervais, Oregon; Mrs. Addie Van Cleave, Woodburn, I. Alvah Downey, Farmington, Washington; Mrs. Arie A. Hewitt, same address; Mrs. Mary F. Stowell, Sublimity, Oregon; Mr Carl H. Downey, Portland, Oregon; and Charles R., Anna J., Zebadee, H. Ralph, Lizzie A., and Clarence D., all of Sublimity.
Mr. Downey's death, was the third in a family of nine brothers and sisters. The two dead are: Mrs. Sarah McElvan and Mrs. Eliza Horton. The living are: Alvah Downey, San Bernardino, California; Adleine Yager, same address; Augusta Downey, Bushnell, Illinois; Harvey Downey, Monmouth, Illoinois; Mary Vurney, Lincoln, Nebraska; Lodema Hatswell, Red Oak, Iowa.
Mr. Downey had many good qualities, great kindness of heart, and sympathy to an unusual degree. To his family he was a kind and indulgent father, a true and loving husband, unmindful of self, he was willing to make any sacrifice for their sakes. He bore his troubles uncomplainingly; many time when able to help himself he would make the effort rather than trouble those who were attending him.
His was a good life, and now that it is ended his children can bring their tribute of affection and can truthfully say the best of it was given for the good of his family.
"God's will be done, not ours." The funeral services were held from his home, Monday, January 4, 1904, the services being conducted by the Rev. Elkins, of the Christian church, and interment was had in the Hobson and Whitney cemetery, near Sublimity.
