1880 OR CENSUS - Christian Gobalet, age 49, occupation farmer & stone mason, b. Switzerland, is enumerated with wife Anna M., age 46, b. Switzerland, along with along with Emil, age 17, b. Switzerland, Charles, age 16, b. Switzerland, Lina, age 14, b. Switzerland, and Janette, age 13, b. Switzerland. Also enumerated with the family, identified as a boarder, is John Kissling, age 2, b. Oregon.
BIOGRAPHICAL (Source - Memoir written by grandson Elmer Embree, submitted by Kim Burke): "Grandfather Christian Gobalet married Miss Anna Marie Kramer, a peasant girl of Switzerland.
Christian Gobalet, while in Switzerland, followed construction of stone and steel bridges. He was a civil engineer.
His European home village was that of Uttgen near the city of Thun of the state of Kanton. He was born in the state of Kanton Wadt Switzerland on 1 Dec 1831. He was an only son but had two sisters. He died at the age of 57 yrs of stomach trouble on 26 Jan 1889.
Christian Gobalet emigrated to the USA in 1872 living for a short time in New Philadelphia Ohio. His wife Anna and their seven children (Sophie, Alfred, Marie, Emil, Charles, Lena & Janette "Nettie") followed him to America a little later.
Christian, while in the USA, followed his profession of stone masonary and farming. He also taught his sons architecture and civil engineering.
Anna Marie Gobalet was an only child. She was born in April 1835 in the town of Sumiwald Switzerland. She died on 19 March 1905 of cancer of the uterus at the age of 65 yrs old.
Their daughters went on to marry as follows: Sophie married John Webber. They had one daughter named Rossette Lydia who later married Wesley H. Loose.
Marie married John B. Embree. Their children: Elmer, Bessie, Dora & Ruth.
Lena married Sylvester Warner. Their children: Charles, Eva & Anna.
Janette married Adolph Hintermann. They had at least 3 boys."
