BIOGRAPHICAL:
Marie was the third child and only daughter of John and Maria Kissling. She grew up at Willard and began teaching at Willard School at the age of 14, having attended a Normal school on Mission Street in Salem. She also taught at Centerview School, teaching for a total of 8 years. In 1907 and 1908 she attended San Jose Normal and taught in the San Jose, CA schools.
In 1909 Marie married a distant cousin, Edward Luthy. They built a house on the old Luthy place, southeast of Mt. Hope Cemetery. In 1910, they sold this home and moved to Salem, where they built a home on E Street.
Marie and Edward began purchasing ranch property in Eastern Oregon in 1911, built a house in Bend and moved onto a homestead in 1914, south of Prineville. By 1924, they owned over 3000 acres of ranch land in Crook County, as well as several homes, in Bend, at Juniper Acres, and at Powell Butte.
Marie spent 30 years in Central Oregon and returned to Salem in 1944, where she lived at 1610 Bellevue Street. She was chairman of the Election Department for many years, and taught Sunday School at Wesleyan Methodist Church for over 20 years. She remained a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, though she preferred to attend a church in her neighborhood. Known for her beautiful gardens, gourmet cooking, and ability to bring others together, Marie was a popular hostess and confidante of many. In 1966, Marie wrote her autobiography in cooperation with a local author, Blanche Edwards. Her life in Central Oregon was chronicled by Mark Van Doren, her cousin, in a set of poems about country life.
Her husband, Edward, died in 1964. Marie moved to The Dalles following a serious injury that left her unable to continue to live alone. She lived for a time with Barbara Hopkins, then moved to a local nursing home. Marie died January 1, 1977 at The Dalles, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, William, Fred, and Hans. Several foster children also survived her. (Source: Judi West)
