OBITUARY:
Pioneer Goes – John A. Hunt Will Be Buried Today – Dies at Old Hunt Farm in Waldo Hills, Sunday Morning – Member of Historic Family – Hon. John A. Hunt, know as the sage of the Waldo Hills, passed into eternity at the old Hunt farm in the Waldo Hills, twelve miles east of Salem. Sunday morning about 6 o’clock, and with his death Oregon lost another of her grand pioneers.
One by one the brave men who fought and struggled, risking their own lives as well as the lives of dear ones to make Oregon the state that it has become, are stealing away to a hard earned rest, leaving a page in the annals of the country which will ever be of interest to the new generations.
Is Descended From Warrior
The Hunt family, which is English in its descent, came from an illustrious general in William the Conqueror’s army who won the title for his brave deeds and finally came to the new world to make a home for himself and his children. From this stock John A. Hunt inherited some of the traits which made the Hunt family deserving of especial prominence in the record of the lives of Oregon’s great men, its representatives having won fame in all walks of life, including statecraft, literature, in the legal arena, and as successful business men, as well as in many other fields of endeavor.
John Hunt was born in Liberty, Indiana, November 28, 1836, the son of John S. Hunt, a well known writer and politician in that community. John S. Hunt, with his family, crossed the plains by ox team in March, 1847, and arrived in Oregon, near the Waldo Hills, in the fall of that year. He took up a donation land claim near Sublimity and established the first school erected in that vicinity. He also erected the first post office, blacksmith shop, and gun store in the Waldo Hills.
First Hotel in Salem
In 1854 he sold his interests in the Waldo Hills and conducted a small hostelry in Salem, which was the first building erected for a hotel in Salem. The small building became one of the most popular stopping places in the valley and was noted for its Bohemian collection of statesmen who stopped at the tiny inn for a few hours to chat with the host and an argument on politics, which even then was stirring things in the Oregon territory. Later, in 1893, he died, leaving behind a large amount of property with an excellent name to his son, John A., who was at that time living on his father’s donation land claim in the Waldo Hills.
Studies in Wagon Making
At the age of twenty the deceased began studying the wagonmaker’s trade in this city, but gave it up for the farm. In 1857 he moved with his family to Southern Oregon, but returned to the Waldo Hills a few years later and was often heard to remark that there was no place like the Willamette Valley for health and happiness.
Was Stock Raiser and Fruit Man
He was known throughout Oregon as a successful stock raiser and fruit man and was conceded one of the wealthiest men in Oregon. His Christian character won for him many friends and he died leaving a shimmer of luster and an unsullied name to the surviving members of the family.
Five children were born to the family through his marriage to Miss Mary Amon of Indiana, July 9, 1858, and of these Elizabeth G. is the wife of Franklin G. Albaugh of Ashland and Mary C., Mathilda A, Howard B., Nancy, and an infant are deceased. Mrs. Hunt died many years ago. Mr. Hunt was an uncle of Sarah Hunt Steeves in this city, of Jeptha Thomas Hunt of Sublimity, and of Mr. M. W. Hunt of Portland.
The funeral will be held today from the residence at 2 o’clock p.m. and the burial will take place in the old family cemetery, Warren, near Shaw.

Pioneer of 1847 Dead – John A. Hunt, Born in 1836, Answers Call – Distinguished Service to State Is Told by Friend, Who Says Oregon Loses Loyal Son – Salem, Or., July 26, (To the Editor.) – The passing of the late John A. Hunt is a distinct loss not only to Marion County, but to the whole state of Oregon, which he helped to build up and which he loved and honored by a life of splendid citizenship. Born near Liberty, Ind., in 1836, Mr. Hunt crossed the plans by ox team with his parents in 1847 and located in the famous Waldo Hills, where his useful life was passed, except for a five years’ residence in Douglas County, to which he moved in 1875.
In 1880 he returned to his father’s old homestead, a part of which he still owned. The purchase of an adjoining farm gave him a holding of 540 acres, which he quickly turned into a stock farm. By careful management he prospered from the beginning.
Mr. Hunt was the founder of the Waldo Hills Pioneer Association, donating one of his beautiful groves for its annual meeting. He was its first and as yet its only president, and was the last of the 1847 pioneers in the immediate vicinity.
While living in Douglas County, he was elected State Senator as a Republican and sought to serve the whole state rather than any special section. While not a politician in the sense usually applied to that term, he had a keen perception into things political. He was a generous and loving husband and father, was esteemed a wise counselor, and in his passing all have lost a friend.
He was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Amon, July 29, 1858. Five children were born. He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Miss Matilda Hunt and Mrs. Grace E. Albaugh, of Dunsmuir, Cal. Burial was made in Warren Cemetery. H. H. Savage. John A. Hunt was born near Liberty, Indiana, November 28, 1836, and died at his farm home near Silverton Sunday, July 13, 1913. Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Lawrence of Salem, pastor of the Baptist church, of which deceased had been a member for many years. I. pg 22
Mr. Hunt crossed the plains with his parents when he was but eleven years old. The family settled in the Waldo Hills and later moved to Salem, where Mr. Hunt, Sr., engaged in the hotel business for a time. John A. Hunt moved to Southern Oregon in 1877, where he remained for five years. He then returned to Marion County, preferring this place as a home. July 9, 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Amon.
Mr. Hunt has always been considered one of our most substantial citizens. He led an absolutely clean life and was respected and honored most by those who knew him best. Much of the development of this portion of Marion County is due to the efforts of this sturdy pioneer. (Source: Scrapbook, Silverton Public Library)
