OBITUARY:
SUHS Girl, Revived After Wreck, Dies – Channing Louise Large, the Silverton High School girl who was once revived from death after an auto wreck Dec. 13, died of her injuries Thursday.
Channing, 16, suffered serious head injuries when her car skidded out of control about 9 p.m. on State Street at the intersection of Alaska Avenue. She was returning home from her job at a Salem restaurant.
The Marion County Sheriff’s office reported her car skidded over an eight-foot embankment. She was thrown out of the car and the car rolled over, landing on its roof with her underneath.
One of the first on the scene was Robert R. Gerig, a member of the Fire District 1 emergency medical team. Gerig said it took about five minutes for firemen and sheriff’s deputies to extract Channing from the wreck. Gerig said when they got her out she had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. “She was clinically dead,” he said. But Gerig and Jim Erby, also a member of the medical team, restored her breathing and pulse with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by the time an ambulance arrived to take her to Salem Hospital.
Channing died eight days later in Salem Hospital. She was active and popular at Silverton High School, where she was a junior, friends said. She was a member of The Peoples Church in Salem.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Large of 12180 Waldo Hills Dr., brothers Michael of the U.S. Air Force, Bill and John at home, a sister Michelle Carter of Bakersfield, Calif., grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Large of Sublimity, and her great-grandmother Mabelle Large of Birmingham, Ala.
Funeral services were Saturday at Unger Funeral Chapel, interment is in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Past Dennis A. Davis officiated.
Pall bearers were Marion Lancaster, Mike Large, Steve Earls, Gene Eby, Carl Cypert, Lee Barcot, and Bill Large.
