John H. Simeral was born December 14, 1825, and was reared in Indiana. He later moved to Iowa. In 1864, outfitted with wagons, provisions, and horse teams, he crossed the plains. In September 1865, he came to Marion County, located near Salem for two years, then moved upon leased land in Waldo Hills. In 1871, he bought 320 acres of timber land in Clackamas County, which he occupied for 2 years. He sold that land and bought 120 acres near Silverton, where he lived until 1890. A few months later he died in Macleay on December 21, 1891, at the age of 66.
He is survived by his wife, whose maiden name was Elmira E. Crane. She was born in New York, October 28, 1832. Their five children also survive him.
The following children were born to them: Wilton L; A. Frank, a boot and shoe merchant in Silverton; Carrie, wife of H. S. Hicks of Silverton, Newell L., who died at the age of three, and Clarence John.
