BIOGRAPHICAL:
“Wilton Leroy Simeral was born in Jackson County, Iowa, on March 9, 1855, the son of John H. Simeral, a veterinary surgeon. He came with his father and family to Oregon in 1864.
At 21 years of age he started out to make a living for himself. On November 19, 1876, he married Emma Catherine Anderson. She was the daughter of John Franklin and Lucinda Anderson of Howell Prairie. For a year after his marriage Mr. Simeral rented a Hubbard Farm, 4 miles from Salem, then moved to Howell Prairie, and farmed with his father-in-law for a year, then rented a 320-acre farm near Turner, which he farmed successfully for six years. Then he bought 160 acres in Waldo Hills. In 1899 he moved to the Geer farm and in all owned 205 acres.
He learned veterinary surgery from his father and had many occasions to use his skills. He was appointed county stock inspector, serving 9 years, and was associated for some time with State Veterinary Surgeon, James Whitcomb. This was carried on in connection with general farming and was not abandoned until he was appointed by Governor Lord to the position as steward and head farmer of the Oregon State Reform School on March 22, 1896. For many years he served as chief marshall of Oregon State Fair.
Four children were born into the Simeral home: Leroy J., Raymond G., George F., and Myrtle C.
Wilton Simeral passed away in 1919, about age of 64.” (uncited source - from scrapbooks in Silverton Public Library)
