Mrs. Downing, Pioneer, Dies – Another Oregon pioneer’s life has closed with the passing of Mrs. Sarah Catherine Downing, who died Saturday at her North Winter street residence at the age of 82 years. Mrs. Downing was born March 29, 1853, and spent her childhood on her parent’s homestead near Macleay. Her parents, the W.T. Pattons, settled near Macleay in 1848, and like them, Mrs. Downing was possessed of true pioneer spirit. She was married in September, 1874, to Edwin A. Downing, who died in 1920. She was a member of the First Christian Church.
Mrs. Downing had in her possession a scrapbook, which she had kept for many years. The book contains news clippings and other interesting data of the early days of Oregon. She has played an important part in compiling accurate and authentic Marion County history, as well as a source of information for Oregon’s historians.
Mrs. Downing’s hobby was lace making. She designed beautiful and intricate designs. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mary J. Taylor of Portland; brothers, E.B. Patton of Salem and Frank Patton of Astoria, and several nieces and nephews. Final services will be held from the Clough-Barrick chapel Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery with Rev. Guy L. Drill officiating.
