BIOGRAPHICAL:
Killed a Cougar – Saturday night’s storm drove a cougar, or mountain lion, in from the foothills, and it attacked the flocks of Jack Patton several miles east of Macleay. The dogs got after the lion and drove him into the trees. Sunday morning he killed it not 200 yards from the house. It weighed 95 pounds. Mr. Patton felt proud of his achievement and brought the skin to Salem today. He wanted to see if he could get the bounty without mutilating the head. The skin is a beautiful one of seven feet long.

OBITUARY:
Pioneer groups lost one of their most active members Friday, August 26, with the death of A. Jack Patton, 71, at his residence near Macleay. Mr. Patton was born at Macleay on the old Patton donation land claim and lived his entire life in that district. His parents were leaders in the settling of the Waldo Hills community. In October 1891, he married Miss Mabel Taylor, daughter of Marion Taylor of the Taylor Grove community above Mehama. The widow and the two sons born of this union, Vernon of Macleay and Harry of Portland, survive. Two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Sarah Downing and L. B. Patton, both of Salem, Mrs. Jane Taylor of Portland and Frank Patton of Astoria, and a number of cousins, nephews, and nieces, also survive. He was related to a number of families prominent in Salem and vicinity. Mr. Patton was a member of the Macleay grange, the Salem Elks lodge, and the Christian church. He was an enthusiastic sportsman, and was regarded as an authority on hunting and fishing. He had been ill for the past three years and was bedfast for the past month. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 28, at 1:30 p.m. from the chapel of the Cough-Barrick Company, Church at Ferry Streets, with Rev. D. J. Howe officiating. Interment will be in the Warren Cemetery.
