BIOGRAPHICAL:(From - Impressions and Observations of The Journal Man, by Fred Lockley)
Mrs. Virginia Griffith Cooke lives at 3104 N.E. Schuyler Street. Forty years or more ago I used to hunt China pheasants with her brother, Dr. John C. Griffith of Salem, and used to visit her father, Louis C. Griffith, whose home was in the Waldo Hills. The Griffiths were pioneers in 1850…
My father, Louis C. Griffith, was born in Virginia,’ said Mrs. Cooke. ‘When they crossed the plains in 1850, Father, who was an expert shot and enjoyed hunting, supplied not only his own family but many of the others with antelope and buffalo meat. Mother, whose maiden name was Margaret Savage, was in the train. She was a little girl, 10 years younger than father. She was a daughter of Dr. John Savage, who took a claim three miles from the claim on which I was born. Father was 28 and mother was 18 when they were married.
We moved from the Waldo Hills to Salem when I was a young girl, so that we children could go to school. My sister Helen and my brother Carl were born in Salem. I went to school to Lizzie Boise, who taught a private school in the rear room of the Episcopal Church. Later we all attended Willamette University.
I am one of eight children. Serelia was the first and I am the second. John, for many years a dentist in Salem, came next, then Jennie, then Frank, who for many years was a physician at the state hospital, Salem. Mattie was the next. She married Judge Leonard H. McMahan of Salem. Helen married A.W. Giesy of Salem. Carl was the youngest. He became a physician. I am the only one of the family now living.’
Oregon Journal 28 Sep 1938 12:5-6.
BIOGRAPHICAL:
I was married, June 20, 1882, to George A. Peebles. We had two daughters, Lois and Alice. Lois married Herbert Junk. She died more than 20 years ago. Her daughter, Genevieve Oppen, is a graduate of Willamette University and is now teaching dramatics at Willamette. Alice married Walter Pruden and I am living with them. After the death of my first husband, I married W.W. Cooke, a merchant, who was a dealer in produce…" [uncited]
