SALEM - Sharon Stephen Eichelberger, 93, died Thursday with his family around him.
He married his wife of 68 years, Josephine, in 1931 following his graduation cum laude from Armstrong College in Berkeley, California. She died in 1999.
As a young man, he was the singer for the Del Courtney Orchestra. He worked as a business and accounting manager for the Ford Motor Company and various San Francisco Bay Area Ford dealerships before and after WWII. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty during the war, and later retired as a Reserve Major. He was a partner business manager of Crater Lake Motors in Medford in the 50’s and 60’s.
He was a Rotarian for 48 years, serving as President of the Medford Rotary Club; as District Governor of District 511; and as a member of the Rotary International Council on Legislation. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, a Benefactor of the Rotary Foundation Endowment for World Understanding and Peace, and a recipient of the Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service. He was also the 32nd Degree Mason.
He joined the Salem Rotary Club in the 80’s, when he and his wife moved here to be closer to family. He is survived by his son, Stephen Eichelberger, daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Eichelberger; and grandchildren, Ann and John Eichelberger all of Salem.
Rotarians and friends are invited to attend his wake on Wednesday, January 30, at any time between 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., at Elmer’s Restaurant near the corner of Market and Lancaster in Salem. Refreshments will be served. Private interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Salem. Contributions may be made to the Salem Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 3981, Salem OR 97302. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services, Salem.
