OBITUARY:
Thomas Hunt, of Marion County, a young man aged 19, and a seaman named Fisher, were drowned Dec. 14th on the Columbia River about 75 miles above Priest’s Rapids. They and Mr. Firman Kennoyer of Sublimity were, in company, descending the river in a large skiff. In passing a rapid, a whirl filled the skiff, and while they were attempting to bail it out it turned bottom upward. Hunt and Fisher held to the skiff, and Mr. Kennoyer swam for shore, which he reached after being drawn under twice by the whirlpools. He landed at almost the only place along the bluff where escape was possible. He saw his companions on the bottom of the boat after he came up the first time; upon reaching shore, however, he saw no more of them, though the boat was still in sight. Mr. Kennoyer spent an hour in hopes of discovering them, without success. He then set out on foot, and in twelve miles reached an Indian camp, where he was kindly treated and assisted on his way homeward.

INSCRIPTION:
No indication that he is actually buried here in the family burying grounds - he drowned in the Columbia River.
