May 1, 1907 - July 18, 2007
SILVERTON - Cathaleene Cuddy Riches died peacefully in her home on July 18, 2007 at the age of 100.
Cathaleene Elizabeth Cuddy was born May 1, 1907 to parents, John Leo Cuddy and Sarah Elizabeth Youmans in New Ulm, Minn., the third of five children. She moved with her parents to Mankato, Minn. in 1910.
Cathaleene received her teaching certificate from Mankato Teachers College in 1926. She taught school in Ivanhoe, Minn., 1926-1929, Hayden, Colo., 1928-1930, Silverton Public Schools 1930-1934, Thomas School northeast of Silverton, 1944-1946, and at Victor Point School, 1956 - 1966. She was honored to have been a guest at numerous Silverton High School reunions hosted by her former students.
In 1934, she married Harry LaBare Riches, son of a Waldo Hills Pioneer family. Harry preceded her in death in July 1983.
Cathaleene was a member of the Silverton United Methodist Church for 77 years. She was a member of the Methodist Women’s Society and the Sarah Circle until her passing. Cathaleene cherished the memories and relationships developed over the years through her memberships in many Silverton-area organizations. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge Tryphena #38, Ramona Chapter #58, Order of the Eastern Star, Charter Member of P.E.O. Chapter CX, Past Worthy High Priestess of Willamette White Shrine Salem, Willard Women’s Club, Silverton Hospital Auxiliary, Silverton Historical Society, Waldo Hills Community Club, and Waldo Hills and Silverton Granges. She was the organist in several of these organizations.
Music was an important part of her life. Playing the piano and singing from the age of 5, she sang in high school and college choirs, as well as church. She sang in the Silverton United Methodist Church choir for 50 years. She was a soloist for several organizations and sang for many funerals. Her music was valuable in her teaching career, encouraging her students to sing music and inspiring them to play piano and other musical instruments.
She enjoyed her flower gardens, especially her roses, viewing them from her den and patio. She loved playing cards with friends and family. Hosting dinners and gatherings brought out her Irish laughter and many stories.
Cathaleene is survived by her four children, Raymond C. Riches of Spokane, Wash., Jack C. Riches of Silverton, Wayne C. Riches of Silverton, and Cathie E. Riches of Salem; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; eleven nieces and nephews; and her sister, Donna Cuddy Wolfe of St. Peter, Minn.
