OBITUARY:
Rev. Rolland O. Myer
April 21, 1917 - June 26, 2004
SALEM - It can be said of Rolland Myer, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” Rolland is rejoicing in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His life long passion was introducing people to Jesus.
Rolland was born in Spokane, Wash. to Otto and Constance Myer. At 5 years of age he and his family traveled on the ship Ruth Alexander from Seattle, Wash. to San Diego, Calif., where they settled and lived for over 55 years.
At age 11 Rolland composed his first musical composition. In 1931 the San Diego Union Model Yacht Regatta awarded Rolland 1st Place for the “Best Wood Boat.” The desire to work with wood never ceased.
He graduated from Point Loma High School in 1935 and then enrolled at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, now Biola University, where he eventually met his future wife, Jean Gilgert. As a student Rolland was very involved in leadership in the areas of music, teaching, and preaching.
In 1937 Rolland became the student pastor and also the first pastor of the Evangelical Free Church of Englewood, Calif. Eventually Jean Gilgert, a classmate, assisted Rolland as pianist and youth worker at the church. Rolland received his Bachelor of Theology Degree in June of 1939.
On June 29, 1939 Rolland and Jean were married at the United Brethren Church in Stockton, Calif. Their honeymoon was a week at Mt. Herman, Calif., where Rolland was director of music for the youth camp.
Rolland was faithful in prayer and ministry for 65 years, serving the Lord on the entire West Coast, Arizona, and British Honduras as an Evangelist and/or Pastoring various churches. His gifts of evangelism, expository teaching, multi-gifted talents in music, and his warm, friendly smile blessed many.
His beloved wife preceded him in death Oct. 29, 2003 after 64 1/2 dedicated years together. Also preceding him in death were parents, Otto and Constance Myer; his sisters, Verna Jenkins, Dorothy Gregory, and Mildred Wagner; and his baby grandson, Anthony Myer. He is survived by their children, Daniel Myer of Atlanta, Ga., David Myer of Salem, Donald Myer of Mansfield, Texas, Darlene Baskett of Salem, and Dick Myer of Mt. Angel; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be at 2:30 p.m., Mon., July 19th, at First Baptist Church of Silverton, 229 Westfield, Silverton. Contributions may be made to the ministry of your choice or the Salem Hospital Foundation for Cancer. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
