OBITUARY: 
SALEM - Jack Cuddy Riches, 69, passed away on March 25, 2008 in Westley, California. Born and raised in Silverton, Jack was the second child of Harry and Cathaleene Riches. He lived nearly his entire life in Silverton. In 1956, he graduated from Silverton High School. He then attended Oregon State College before returning to Silverton to farm full time with his father and brother, Wayne. They then incorporated their farm under the name H.L. Riches and Sons, Inc. On April 12, 1969 Jack married Carol Lynn Swartz from Portland, Oregon. Together they built their home and raised four children outside of Silverton in the Waldo Hills.
Over the years, Jack served on and was involved in numerous agricultural organizations including the Oregon Fine Fescue Commission, Wheat Growers Association, and as a board member for Pratum Co-op. Additionally, he served in the Oregon Army National Guard, was a volunteer fire fighter with the Silverton Fire Department, and a member of the Silverton United Methodist Church. Most recently he drove truck for Schneider International and received various awards for exceptional work with the company. Jack was a hard working man who instilled an incredible work ethic in his family. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed time spent with family and friends over the years hunting, fishing, camping, water skiing, snow skiing, horseback riding, and traveling to the coast.
Jack will be missed dearly. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Jennifer (Dirk) Stegeman from Tacoma, Wash., Harry Riches from Depoe Bay, John Riches from Silverton, Jacqueline (Fred) Zurbrugg and their children, Hannah, Jacob, and Oliver Zurbrugg from Silverton; his sister, Cathie Riches from Salem; brothers, Wayne from Silverton and Raymond from Spokane, Wash.; his aunts, Donna Cuddy Wolfe from St. Peter, Minn., and Kay Cuddy from Fremont, Calif.; as well as numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008 at Silverton United Methodist Church. A private graveside service will precede the memorial service. Contributions or Memorials can be made to the American Red Cross or a charity of your choice. Arrangements made by Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.
