Calvin Neal, Our Grandfather
Our grandfather sired nineteen children, raised the three Walker step-children of his 3rd wife, Anne Elizabeth Nash Walker, his nephew Daniel Neal, sole survivor of the family of Valentine Neal, all of whom died on the Oregon Trail of cholera, about 1850. From time to time other nephews and nieces found with him a safe and loving refuge.
Calvin Neal was twenty when his first child was born and his last child was born three years before he died, when he was sixty-four. Grandfather died at age sixty-seven, in 1891....
....Our Grandfather Calvin was a wonderful man who surmounted great handicaps, both of education and poverty, in his lifetime. But he also was fortunate enough to have been married to three lovely young women, who mothered his children be they their own or stepchildren, or niece or nephew, who might be living with them at the time. He was a good neighbor, a prosperous farmer, a good father and husband. Without a formal education himself, but believing an education was important, he gladly gave his own land for a schoolhouse, where all his children and many grandchildren received their early training. Grandfather Calvin was approached by his friends and neighbors to run for Governor, but would not accept because of his lack of education. He never went to school himself, could neither read nor write.
....In an early day newspaper found in Oregon Historical Society files, Portland, Ore. “Calvin Neal, a pioneer of ’44 died near Stayton last week, and fourteen hours after his supposed death revived and lived several hours longer and relapsed and the final dissolution of body and soul took place.” Grandfather was laid to rest in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, just across the road from his D. L. C., his home since 1845.
OBITUARY:
At his home, two miles south of Aumsville, Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1891, Calvin Neal, aged about 65 years.
Deceased was a pioneer farmer of the Aumsville country, having for thirty years or more lived on the place at which he died. Mr. Neal had not been in good health for a year, since he suffered a stroke of paralysis. He was in usual health Monday and had in contemplation as visit to Salem Tuesday, but on the morning of that day was stricken with paralysis, and died after a few minutes. Mr. Neal had already made arrangements to remove to Salem for the purpose of giving his children a higher education. He was preparing to have built for him a neat residence here, and work on its construction was to have commenced this week. He leaves a large family.
Daily Oregon Statesman 3 Sep 1891 4:3

In the last issue we noted the death of Calvin Neal, who lived in the Santiam bottom. Fourteen hours after he had been prepared for burial, Mr. Neal revived and lived about five hours. He was buried last Saturday.
